Aphorism 31

Diseases act conditionally. of Having given proposition of modus homoeopathic cure, Dr. Hahnemann says that
1. Diseases August due to inimical forces of world, which he calls morbific noxious agents
2. These inimical agent are partly-
 a) Physical- agents like heat, cold, rain, damp etc. As per Tridosha theory of Ayurveda, health is a balanced condition of three humours ie: Vata, Pitta, Kaffa. Causes of diseases were held by Hippocrates as imbalance between five humours ie.: Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Sky; as per his humoural theory.
 b) Psychical - Any frightful dream, superstitious fancy, solemn prediction.
 3. These morbific noxious agents derange state of health only when there is sufficient conditions applied -
 a) When organism is sufficiently exposed to agent as in cases of epidemics.
 b) When agent is stronger in intensity.
 c) Organism is susceptible to attack of the agent By these above mentioned points it is clarified that inimical forces do not produce disease in all organisms nor it acts at all times.
► In footnote Dr. Hahnemann says that when he calls disease derangement of man's state of health, he does not want to give any hyperphysical explanation regarding the internal nature of disease, nor regarding their cause; rather what he intended to convey is that diseases are not due to any material or chemical alteration in the body, not dependent on material morbific agent rather they are due to spirit like conceptual dynamic power which has the capability to derange state of health.
This aphorism teaches that diseases act conditionally which is greatly dependent on susceptibility of person. It is the susceptibility which makes a person prone to attack of any inimical agent that creates his peculiar constitutional diasthesis, which can only be settled by individualization; thereby, in homoeopathic mode of treatment physician is utter failure, if he cannot individualize.
